Lore: New Byzantium

The Byzantines have a society built entirely on unconstrained capitalistic principles; the government operates as a publicly-traded corporation; with a board of shareholders who vote on national policy. Byzantium claims ownership of the majority of the Middle East, a segment of northern India, a swathe of Eastern Europe, Northeast Africa, and a number of smaller colonial claims across the world, all directed by the notoriously reclusive President Justin Constantin, former CEO of Cogwork Global.

Constantinople serves as a hub for dozens of globe-spanning megacorporations, shaping the Byzantine empire's internal and international policies and goals. Cogwork Global have historically been the biggest fish in the pond; an old-world manufacturing company that produced appliances of all kinds - in the new world, GC has a plump finger in just about every sector's pie. Red Sun are a globally infamous Private Military Corporation with the force projection of a small nation, willing to take just about any job with their 'No Survivors' guarantee. Specialist companies like the software giant Datasmith, the arms dealers Kronos Munitions, the security firm Judicia and the research conglomerate Foresight nurture monopolies on respective sectors, producing products and services spread right across the trade empire's lands and beyond. For those without the security that capital can provide, Byzantine society becomes far less bountiful and far more dangerous.

Byzantium fields Cataphractii; high-performance, lightweight Combat Frames designed to prioritize mobility and intelligent battlefield control, that sport a streamlined angular silhouettes. As the majority of Cataphractii are owned and operated by PMCs, Byzantine combat doctrine is informed by a philosophy of minimising cost and risk through precision lightning-strike operations. Standard armaments include EM-fired bullpup assault rifles and smart missiles, with multiple RnD firms closing in on field tests for experimental energy-based weapon and shield systems. Byzantine forces make frequent use of Arcblade-type close combat weapons; high voltage alternating magnetic fields tear apart particles, creating a swirling shearing edge of ionised matter, able to tear through almost any substance.
